Episode 52: Weekend Planning with Your Partner with Miranda Bayard-Clark
Weekends can be a time of rest, family connection, and fun — but for many couples, they also become a source of tension and unmet expectations. In this episode, host Hannah Morgan welcomes Miranda Bayard-Clark, a preventative couples coach who specializes in helping parents maintain strong relationships after kids.
Miranda explains why weekends are often a hot spot for conflict and shares simple strategies couples can use to plan ahead, align expectations, and prevent unnecessary stress. She also offers tools for handling conflicts in the moment so weekends feel joyful and restorative instead of overwhelming.
Key Takeaways
Weekend conflicts often arise because expectations aren’t shared ahead of time.

If you’re coming off a busy Labor Day weekend like I am, this might be the perfect time to reflect on what went well, what was fun, and what you might want to do differently for the next long weekend—or even a regular one. Today, I’m chatting with Miranda Bayard-Clark, a preventative couples coach who helps us do exactly that. We’ll be talking about how to work with your partner to plan your weekends so everyone’s needs are met and the time feels restful and joyful.[01:28] Hannah Morgan:
Miranda, I’m so excited to have you on the show today. Let’s start by hearing a little bit about who you are and the services you provide.[01:35] Miranda Bayard-Clark:
Thanks for having me! My name is Miranda, and I’m a preventative couples coach. I’m passionate about helping couples maintain their relationship after becoming parents. Even the strongest relationships can decline once children come along. I believe the greatest gift you can give your kids is a strong relationship between the two of you — so that’s what I help couples protect and maintain.[01:59] Hannah Morgan:
Love that. And I know it’s so needed. So let’s talk about weekends — which can be full of activities, projects, and sometimes conflict.[02:07] Miranda Bayard-Clark:
Yes, I’ve found that most conflict between couples happens over the weekend. The problem is often a lack of conversation about expectations. For example, if I’m looking forward to relaxing in the sun with a book, but my husband is ready to tackle yard projects, we’re misaligned. That’s why every Friday we ask each other, “What do you hope to get out of the weekend?” It helps us share what we want to accomplish, balance tasks with rest, and make sure both of our needs are met.[02:56] Hannah Morgan:
That’s so smart. Weekends can get overscheduled, and energy shifts can make commitments feel overwhelming. Talking ahead of time can prevent disappointment or hurt feelings. But what about when the conflict pops up in the moment?[03:12] Miranda Bayard-Clark:
Great question. If you’re already in the middle of the weekend and misalignment shows up, you can pause and say, “Hey, we didn’t actually talk about our expectations. I’m feeling some tension. What do you need, and here’s what I’m hoping for.” That kind of transparency — even saying, “This feels awkward, what do you think is happening?” — opens the door to being heard without triggering defensiveness. It allows you to reset and move forward together.[04:20] Hannah Morgan:
I love that. Thank you so much for sharing these strategies, Miranda. I know listeners will find them incredibly helpful.[04:28] Miranda Bayard-Clark:
Thank you for having me — it was a pleasure.[05:52] Hannah Morgan:
